About Mark Taylor
My name is Mark Taylor, and invention has been the central thread of my life.
From childhood in Nottinghamshire, England, I first helped my father on building projects. His encouragement wasn't just a pat on the back. If I came up with a good idea, we used it – we integrated it into the work we were doing. Seeing my ideas actually applied, and seeing the results in the real world, gave me the confidence to believe in myself and my ideas. That nurturing beginning set me firmly on the path to becoming an inventor.
Professional Journey
As I grew older, my love of science fiction and hands-on experimentation fueled my passion for engineering. I won early awards for my projects and eventually trained as an aerospace engineer with Rolls Royce, at their research and development facility in Nottingham. That site operated around a dozen jet engine test beds and was the place where many prototypes were created and tested.
My work there was both practical and intellectually demanding. I was often tasked with figuring out how to make things that had never been made before, or to pioneer new methods as the industry transitioned to computer numerical control (CNC) systems.
Technological Contributions
One of the things I recognized while helping to move Rolls Royce's manufacturing into CNC processes was that it was only a matter of time before battlefields became computerized. The precision that computers brought to factories would, inevitably, transform warfare. That realization turned out to be correct.
Over the years, I also developed or contributed to technologies that shaped the modern world: internet banking systems, QR codes, global communications satellite networks, advanced aerospace testing methods, and even early concepts behind vaping technology.
The Cost of Innovation
My journey as an inventor has also had a heavy cost. Some of my work in defense drew hostile attention from foreign intelligence services. I became a target for espionage, sabotage, and persecution. This ultimately cost me my career, my home, and my country, forcing me into exile from England to America.
⚠️ Be very careful about getting involved in defense-related technologies. Unless you are exceptionally good at it, and working under the protection of a major defense organization, the risks can outweigh the rewards. Adverse attention from hostile actors can destroy your life.
Why Inventor DIY Exists
I share my story not to dwell on hardship, but to help others learn from my experience. Protecting your work is critical – through patents, confidentiality agreements, and vigilance. The world is full of opportunists, corporations, and even state actors who will take what you've created if you let them.
That is why I built InventorDIY.com. This site is meant to be a resource by inventors, for inventors – a place to avoid the traps and mistakes I made, to navigate the challenges of invention, and to succeed without losing everything in the process.
